OM STORHOLMEN

At Storholmen you decide the pace yourself - whether you want to go fishing, hiking or just find peace. On the island you will find a nice hiking terrain with beautiful nature. There are good fishing opportunities, both summer and winter.

Hisorie om Storholmen

From "Segn og Soge" - Written for Sande Sogelag (no. 15 1991)

(The article about Storholmen was written in 1974. In the attached letter, Krohn Brekke says that it is mostly like a draft to count and asks that it could be rewritten as needed. But it is mainly reproduced as it came from Brekke's hand. He died May 9, 1976.)

When older people today pass Storholmen on a nice summer evening on their way out between the islands to get boiled fish if possible, it is with a certain sadness that one thinks back on what life and movement there was in their youth. Today, many houses are empty and reminiscent of what once was.

The old trading town of Storholmen is one among many along the coast that had to suffer the death in favour of easier living conditions. Yes, the conditions in that way are probably easier, but if we are a happier people for that reason, can be discussed.

In 1880, Gerhard Chr. Brekke from Kvamsøy bought a piece of land on the east side of Storholmen, a few stone's throw from south end of Kvamsøy. People around here understood little of what he meant by sitting down on a bare island where no one had previously lived. But Gerhard probably had his opinions on it and reckoned that the sea at that time was national road number one.

He immediately started building a sea warehouse on three heights. In addition to the salt plan for fish and herring, there was a shop, bakery, and room for own housing in the first era. In addition, he furnished several rooms in the second and third floor for fishermen who went fishing in the winter. They also got a place to salt the cod on particularly reasonable terms.

In July Pascal Bolwijn & Jeanette Hansen buys the old trading place on Storholmen. And plan to move there permanently within a few months. They continue renting out vacation houses to tourists. And has big plans to bring this beautiful place back to life. To be continued.....
